Etosha National Park is not only one of Africa’s largest game reserves but offers one of the world’s greatest game viewing experiences. The park is centred around the huge Etosha salt pan which, for a few weeks a year forms a shallow lagoon frequented by flamingos and pelicans while for the rest of the year it shimmers silver in the heat.

Around the salt pan, habitats like open grasslands and woodland play host to 114 species of mammal and 340 species of bird. One of the many charms of Etosha though, is how easy all this wonderful wildlife is to spot thanks to the park’s plentiful waterholes – you could simply pull up beside one of them and let all the animals come to you!

Here, even seeing an elusive black rhino is relatively easy; ticking off cheetahs, springbok, Burchell’s zebra, hyenas and jackals, and birds like ostriches, secretary birds and yellow-billed hornbills and much, much more is all in a day’s safari. The two most common spots in the park though? Elephants, who roam the plains in hundreds strong herds, and lions, of which there is an impressive population of around 500.
