The gateway to explore the Red Centre. A remote town, Alice Springs is found halfway between Darwin and Adelaide.

Alice Springs is the largest town in the Northern Territory although only consisting of a small population of close to 26,000 people. It lies directly between Darwin and Adelaide and although more commonly known as the gateway to the Red Centre its pioneering beginnings were a vital part of the country's development.

Alice springs began as a mere waterhole enroute from Darwin to Adelaide but after the establishment of the overland telegraph line and hence the telegraph station this small rural stop became the vital infrastructure needed to communicate faster not only from North to South but also across the seas back to England. To this day you can visit the historic precinct of the Telegraph station.

“Alice” as it is more affectionally called is also sometimes used as the base point to access the main landscape attractions such as Uluru, Kata Tjuta (Mount Olga) and Kings Canyon. It is also a great place to delve into the natural wildlife, with an abundance to see at the desert park.
